She is seeking to compete in the upcoming World Boxing Championships without being subject to further gender testing.

When she returned to Algeria after winning gold at the Paris Olympics, Iman Khalif received a hero's welcome, but more than a year later she's still fighting for acceptance on the world stage of boxing. Back in May, the Global Federation of Boxing announced that Khalif would be banned from all competition until she underwent mandatory gender testing to determine her eligibility. On Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport announced Khalif was appealing the decision, but offered few details saying the parties are currently exchanging written submissions and with their agreement a hearing will be scheduled. Khalif, who says she was born and identifies as a woman, came under attack after winning Olympic gold by several high-profile figures, including author J.K. Rowling and J.D. Vance, who both accused her of really being a man. The 26-year-old athlete competed for years without questions about her gender, then in 2023 she was disqualified from the International Boxing Association's World Championships, the IBA claiming that Khalif had failed a gender eligibility test. But she went on to qualify for the Olympics and the International Olympic Committee stripped the IBA of its status as the governing body for the sport over concerns about how the organization was run. In her appeal, Khalif is asking that she be allowed to compete in the World Boxing Championships set to begin on Thursday without being subject to a gender test.
