Trump administration Border Czar Tom Homan stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will ramp up operations in New York City, referencing the city's sanctuary laws as a driving factor. Homan mentioned ongoing discussions with Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani and noted that recent ICE raids, such as the one on Canal Street, have led to multiple arrests.

The announcement follows legal disputes over ICE's presence at Rikers Island and comes just weeks before Mamdani is set to replace Mayor Eric Adams, an ally of Homan. While Mamdani's team reaffirmed a commitment to protecting immigrant rights and upholding sanctuary laws, a recent poll indicates a majority of voters oppose increased ICE activity in American cities.

Yeah. And we've seen some high-profile raids in recent months, so we could see more of those in the future. Border Czar Tom Homan clarifying that immigration officers are already operating in New York City. And he plans to ramp up those efforts, pointing to New York's sanctuary city laws. It comes on the heels of last month's ice raid on Chinatown's Canal Street that resulted in the arrest of nine undocumented street vendors and four protesters. I plan on being in New York City in the near future. We're going to do operations in New York City. We know in New York City, me and Mayor Adams at one point had an agreement to let ice into Rikers Island so we can arrest the public safety threats and the safety and security of that facility, but the city council shut it down. The city council sued Mayor Eric Adams after he signed an executive order allowing the move in April, claiming that having agents at the facility could lead to civil rights violations. Ice previously had an office at Rikers, but it was shut down in 2014 when sanctuary city laws were established, prohibiting the agency from having a presence there. Under current law, Rikers is slated to close in 2027 and be replaced with four smaller borough-based jails. The news also comes just weeks before Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani is set to be sworn in, replacing Adams who had, by the way, been an ally of Homan and the Trump administration. If the mayor of New York City wants to come and talk about making the streets safer, open up for discussion. I'm willing to meet with anybody. President Trump's willing to meet with anybody. So we welcome any conversation, but if they don't want to assist, they want to keep pushing back and impeding our efforts, then we're going to just send more teams there and we're going to clear the zone. The president ran a campaign. Mamdani said earlier this week that he reached out to the White House to arrange a meeting with President Trump, requesting to talk about the city's affordability crisis. But in regard to immigration, his transition team told the New York Post, New York City's more than three million immigrants are central to our city's strength, vitality and success. The mayor-elect remains steadfast in his commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of every single New Yorker and upholding our sanctuary laws. Mamdani is scheduled to make two TV appearances later today, but has yet to personally respond to Homan's remarks. Meanwhile, according to a recent Siena College poll, 61 percent of registered voters who were surveyed say they oppose deploying ICE officials to the streets of American cities to round up illegal immigrants.
