As the shutdown of part of I-680 northbound in Fremont continues, drivers being detoured around that closure are finding themselves spending a couple of hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

A portion of Interstate 680 in Fremont has been closed for bridge rehabilitation work, resulting in major traffic congestion and lengthy detours for drivers. Northbound lanes are shut between the Mission Boulevard/Highway 238 exit and Highway 84, with traffic diverted through Mission Boulevard and Niles Canyon. 

Caltrans reports that the closure, which began on a Friday night, is expected to save over 130 days of night work by concentrating repairs over a single weekend. Drivers have experienced delays of over two hours along the 11-mile detour, and local residents have faced increased neighborhood traffic. Caltrans anticipates reopening the freeway on schedule and has set up a hotline for driver inquiries.

I think it's uh ratherly unnecessary. Good evening on this Saturday night. I'm Christina Rendon. Drivers being detoured around that closure finding themselves spending a couple of hours in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Let's get right out to KTVU's John Krynczak live in Fremont tonight with the latest on this story. John. Yeah Christina we're essentially at the beginning of that closure. Northbound traffic here being diverted off of the freeway off of 680 onto Mission Boulevard and then routed through that detour but drivers I spoke to say they didn't realize just how bad the traffic would be. So how long have you been in traffic for? For about at least an hour. Going on an hour 40 minutes. Drivers trying to get around the 680 closure in Fremont spending much of their Saturday evening in barely moving traffic like Martha Lane who was trying to make her way to Farmington. It's been about an hour. And you're not even halfway. Oh no no. The northbound lanes of 680 have been closed since Friday night from the Mission Boulevard highway 238 exit to highway 84 while crews rehabbed the bridge over Mission Boulevard. They did the southbound side two weeks ago. We know that is never a good weekend to close a highway one like 680 but the work it was necessary. Traffic is being diverted around the closure on Mission Boulevard and Niles Canyon. Saturday evening it was taking drivers well over two hours to get through the 11 mile detour. It's horrible. Yeah it's not even moving. The backup also creating headaches for people who live along the detour trying to make a trip to the store or dealing with drivers cutting through their neighborhoods. But Caltrans says a weekend of pain will pay off. By being able to do this work through the weekend we are saving over 130 days of night work. If you can Caltrans suggests avoiding the area entirely by looping around on 880 and 580 at least that's all freeway. But for those who can't it's a struggle. Rich Gomez is trying to get to Modesto. I have my heater going because it's 90 degrees because I don't want my car to overheat. How are you kind of passing the time you listen to music? I'm listening to the 49ers, the A's game. The good news Caltrans says the work is going smoothly and they're on track to reopen 680 on schedule at five o'clock Monday morning. Until then stay hydrated, have a good playlist. You got to be patient. What advice would you have for drivers coming through here? Please don't do this.
