It's the calm before the storm in Jamaica and people are using the time as best they can to prepare for what's coming. In the capital Kingston, authorities have issued mandatory evacuation orders, opened hundreds of temporary shelters and closed the two main airports. With winds of up to 230 kilometres an hour, Hurricane Melissa is forecast to dump as much as 72 centimetres of rain on the island, bringing the threat of catastrophic flooding. What we're doing here today is pretty much just putting things together for the storm. So we use plywoods to barricade the areas and sandbags to ensure that during the storm we don't have any issues of any debris going inside. Heavy rain is already drenching the Dominican Republic, where hundreds of homes and water supplies have been damaged. And in neighbouring Haiti, people say they were completely unprepared. I'm asking the authorities for help. We're currently trapped. People are starving. I'm asking shelter managers to help us. I don't know if it's possible, but at least a plate of hot food. If you could give us something, it would be invaluable. People are in need. Melissa is expected to reach Cuba by Tuesday night, where forecasters warn of up to 30 centimetres of rain. We're going to have two full days of hurricanes and this area will be completely flooded. The storm system is then expected to move towards the Bahamas later on Wednesday.
