But we begin tonight in the Caribbean, where Jamaica is bracing for its worst storm in history. The massive Category 5 Hurricane Melissa could make landfall as soon as tonight, bringing with it a high risk for loss of life and catastrophic damage. Mandatory evacuation orders are now in place for coastal areas of Jamaica, where we find CBS's Jason Allen with more. Jason. Ed, good afternoon. I know we were probably expecting to see me bouncing around and getting pushed in the wind and a lot of rain falling, but this is the nature of reporting on hurricanes and weather, and we don't have that right now. It's a much needed break in those heavy bands of rain and heavy gusts of wind that Kingston's been experiencing for much of the day. This has been a really, really slow burn out here. As you look at the waterway back behind me, this storm moving at three miles an hour, five miles an hour, and people have been preparing for it and feeling the effects of it for the last couple of days. And only now is it really starting to hit with conditions getting worse as the night goes on. People here have not been through anything like this before. As you mentioned, it's been more than 35 years since there was a storm like this, Gilbert, back in 1988. And we're finding that most people around the city are not preparing for it, maybe just getting some food at home, but most of them are staying at home. They prefer to be there and protect their belongings rather than stay at any shelters in the city. At this point, it's probably too late to prepare. The storm off the coast headed in and expected to make landfall along Jamaica coast sometime in the early morning hours tomorrow. Jason Allen there in Kingston, Jamaica.
