The Atlantic Ocean's first hurricane of the season, Erin, has continued to gain strength and currently sits off the coast of Anguilla.

Hurricane Erin, the first hurricane of the season, has rapidly intensified in the Atlantic, reaching Category 3 status with sustained winds of 120 miles per hour. The storm is currently located northeast of Anguilla, and its outer bands are bringing significant rainfall to parts of Puerto Rico. 

Forecast models indicate that Hurricane Erin is unlikely to make direct landfall in the United States, but it is expected to generate strong wave action along the coast. The Bahamas and Bermuda remain on alert as the storm moves northward. Meteorologists emphasize the importance of preparedness, as the peak of hurricane season has not yet arrived. In addition, severe weather, including flooding and thunderstorms, is affecting parts of the central United States.

The first hurricane of the season is rapidly gaining strength as it churns in the Atlantic. Right now, Aaron is a Category 3 hurricane packing 120 mile-per-hour winds. The storm is about 170 miles northeast of Anguilla. Here with a look at Aaron and a closer look at the weather ahead is meteorologist John Elliott from our New York station, WCBS. John, good morning. Well, happy Saturday to you, Dana. A real quick snapshot of this rapidly intensifying storm. Certainly breathing a sigh of relief, but look at how well-defined it is already. The outer bands bringing quite a bit of rain into parts of Puerto Rico. As we track this, amazing that it's a Category 4, watch as it makes the bend. There's really good agreement that it does not bring a direct hit into the states, but we're going to see some serious wave action. Also, the Bahamas and Bermuda concerned about this Cat 3, then Cat 2 storm as it meanders up the coast. Two different model runs I want to show you. This is the GFS. There's really good agreement between the model kind of buffet that we serve up with this as it makes that turn. But I just have to remind you that, don't forget, we're not even anywhere near the peak. We're right here where things are really getting busy. So even though it's a miss for many, take advantage of the quiet time to make sure you have a plan. Active severe weather we need to talk about right now in parts of Minnesota. These are flood warnings. These are severe thunderstorm warnings. We're going to see tornadic activity, and this is going to continue to plague parts of the central states in concert with all of this heat. I know it's honeybee day, but there's nothing sweet about these real field numbers in the triple digit range. We are going to see some relief during the course of the weekend for parts of the Northeast. Don't forget, we're watching Aaron.
