Hurricane Erick briefly strengthened to a Category 4 storm before striking Mexico as a Category 3, causing significant impacts on June 19.

Hurricane Erick rapidly intensified to a Category 4 storm before weakening slightly and making landfall in southern Mexico as a Category 3 hurricane. The storm brought severe impacts, including flooding, storm surge, and damaging winds, especially in areas near El Cirelo and Acapulco. 

After landfall, Erick weakened quickly as it interacted with mountainous terrain, but heavy rain continued to cause significant flooding, with some regions experiencing up to 16 inches of rainfall. The hurricane was rated a 4 on the AccuWeather Real Impact Scale due to its rapid strengthening and the extent of its impacts.

Hurricane Erick makes landfall after rapidly strengthening

Well, amazingly, Eric became a Category 4 hurricane for a brief time late last night, early this morning, before making landfall. This is what the satellite looked like when it lost a little bit of its wind intensity and became a Category 3 storm again, as it made landfall very close to, or near, El Cirelo there around 7 a.m. Eastern, or 4 a.m. Pacific Time, on the south side of Mexico. Now, the storm's been interacting with the mountains and land, and it is a shell of its former self. 2 o'clock Pacific Time numbers here. Max sustained winds 50 mph. Very ragged, very disrupted compared to what it would look like just 12 hours ago. But look at the footage there. Flooding, storm surge, winds. We've seen all kinds of problems out there. Again, we're beginning to see less wind concern there. But still, some spots near Acapulco potentially gusting to 40-plus mph, with some squalls associated with this. The biggest problems by far are flooding rain at this point, moving forward. Some areas still in the midst of an 8- to 16-inch rain event from Acapulco east. So we have had many severe problems. And again, Eric's Impacts, this has been an AccuWeather Real Impact Scale rating of 4 for Mexico here, as this really ramped up. It had a tremendous strengthening phase last night into the wee hours of the morning before landfall. So look at the shield of clouds. Some of the cirrus radiating outward from that zone of convection, expanding across parts of the Gulf in general. And there is some secondary convection that's helping to fuel some of that as well. So it's not all entirely Eric. But that's where the cloud cover is. We have a lot of shear that's disrupting any potential for development across the rest of the Caribbean. So while we've had five named storms already in the first, what, five weeks or so of the east Pacific storm season that began on May 15th. No storms yet, no signs of life in the Atlantic, at least in the short term.
