Human remains were found at a Belmont park undergoing creek restoration. KTVU has learned authorities believe the remains may be Native American in origin but are continuing to investigate.

Belmont police have confirmed the discovery of human remains at Twin Pines Park, located near the police station and city hall. The remains were found during a city project aimed at restoring Belmont Creek, which had been affected by urban runoff and invasive species. 

Investigators are currently working to determine whether the remains are of Native American origin and to rule out any connection to local missing persons cases. Authorities have stated there is no danger to the public, and the park has since been reopened. Police expect to release more information as the investigation progresses.

Well, Claudine Belmont police aren't saying much about why they were here at this park, which happens to be right next to the police station and city hall. But I learned investigators did find human remains. Sky Fox was overhead after Belmont police closed off Twin Pines Park for an investigation. Their focus was near a playground and picnic area. We're doing an investigation in the back of Twin Pines Park today, potentially related to an old case of ours. Belmont Police Lieutenant Pete Lottie would not provide details. In order to keep the integrity of the investigation, this ongoing investigation, I really can't add any details to that at this time. But I've learned from a law enforcement source human remains were found in the park and that investigators believe they may be Native American in origin. But the source tells me police are working to confirm that and make sure the remains aren't linked to any local missing persons cases. Our cameras spotted investigators sifting through material at the park not far from a bridge and Belmont Creek. The police investigation comes as public works crews have been at the park as part of a city project restoring the creek, which has been degraded because of urban runoff and invasive species. Construction had been underway and will continue into the fall. Heavy machinery was directly adjacent to the police activity. Authorities say there is no danger to the public. There is no risk to the public at this time. There's no safety issues. But the investigation did turn heads at city hall and the police department, both of which are adjacent to the park. I would like to think that if they're, if they're onto something that's like potentially cold case, that that's a good thing. It's one, exciting and two, scary, of course, you know, just this park, there's plenty of kids that play at it. You know, families bring their young ones, all that good stuff. So I don't know. I'm let's see what happens. Well, it doesn't really bother me because I'm glad the police are on it. And so they'll probably be done at the end of the day. And in fact, we saw a lot of outside agency investigators leave the park just at about three o'clock this afternoon. The park has since been reopened.
