This time last year, few people outside New York City knew the name of Zohran Mamdani. Now, he is set to be the mayor of the nation's largest city. Lilia Luciano spoke with organizers about how he connected with voters.

Zohran Mamdani has been elected as the next mayor of New York City after securing over 50% of the vote. His campaign was notable for its strong support among voters under 45 and first-time mayoral voters, as well as a record-breaking volunteer effort involving over 100,000 people.

The campaign leveraged social media and digital outreach to connect with young voters, generating 17 million online views and viral content. Mamdani's platform focused on affordability measures such as free buses, universal child care, and rent freezes, while also addressing criticism regarding his progressive politics and positions on international issues.

How Zohran Mamdani struck a chord with New York City voters

This time last year, few people outside of New York City knew the name Zoran Mamdani. Well, now he is set to be the mayor of the nation's largest city. On Tuesday, he won more than 50 percent of the vote, carrying 70 percent of voters under the age of 45 and winning 65 percent of those voting for mayor for the very first time. The campaign broke canvassing records, too, with more than 100,000 volunteers. CBS's Lilia Luciano spoke with some of those organizers about how Mamdani connected to voters. How's it going, guys? Do you have 60 seconds to talk to us about the election? What a difference a year makes. At 34 years old, New York City's mayor-elect, Zoran Mamdani, mobilized a political movement. How would you describe the Mamdani campaign? Joyful. People-powered. Authentic. It's true. The Zoran Mamdani card has returned. The Mamdani message, and the memes, struck a chord with young voters on social media. What was the blueprint? The blueprint was to plaster the Zoran Mamdani campaign on every facet of the Internet. The strategy is to not only get into spaces where conversations about electoral politics typically occur, it's getting to every single niche where young people are within digital spheres. Makeup creators, Twitch streamers, video game content creators. We were able to generate 17 million views. And views turned into votes. And they did such an effective video on Valentine's Day because that was the deadline. That video of him carrying flowers and giant heart balloons and telling people to be my Valentine and to, you know, update your registration, it reached so many people. The campaign zeroed in on issues of affordability. What stuck with people? Custom free buses, universal child care, inter-rent freeze, and cheaper groceries. Critics focused on Mamdani's youth and experience in progressive politics, with President Trump labeling him a communist. Others denounced his criticism of the Israeli government and his support of the Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions movement while opposing the war in Gaza. I remember hearing from voters who were concerned about anti-Semitism. When people told you that, what would you tell them? I would focus on what he has been doing to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe and what he has committed to doing to keep Jewish New Yorkers safe. Like what kinds of things? He has committed an 800% increase in hate violence prevention in this city. We've never seen that level of commitment from City Hall.
