How to stay safe and sun smart at the beach this Fourth of July

Welcome back to CBS Mornings. If you are heading to the beach this 4th of July weekend, we have a very special talk at the table for you. It is just for you. We're focusing on some key safety tips. Yes, we'll talk about sunscreen, but also important ones like how to secure a beach umbrella, some tricks as well. We're joined by real simple editor in chief, Lauren Iannotti, who has beach tips that you really, really, really should know. Thank you very much for being here. Welcome. Thanks for having me. SPF is really important. I know it is. I know it is. We're going to get to it, and how often you should reapply, all that for sure. But first, beach umbrellas. Right. How do you secure one? Oh gosh, this is also very, very important. So we like to say it real simple, safety first, super fun second, right? So if you're going to bring an umbrella to the beach, which you should for your sun protection, as long as it's not too windy, you want to make sure you get it in the sand securely. We are hearing stories. I don't know if you've seen any of those videos. Yeah, the lifeguard got impaled just a couple of days ago. Yes, they will blow away and roll down the beach, and you've got like a running of the bulls kind of situation and people trying to get away from them. So you've got to dig a very deep hole. You want to be a foot and a half in there, okay? Bring a shovel. There are those crank things. You've seen lifeguards do them. You've seen people at the pool club do them. You want to do it exactly right. Take your time, get it in there, pack that sand back on, hook all the clamps. If there's any safety functions, don't skimp on that. Do it. You can actually buy bags that you can fill with sand around and put it around it. You want to make sure that's very secure. Point it towards the wind. So it's kind of blowing it further in, not blowing it up and out, all this stuff. If there is wind. Tell us about this no sand trick here. This is amazing. I've never seen this. Where has this been in my whole life? I know. I got to give it up for your props team. This is really pretty too, right? I like the sheet. Oh, the props guys. All right. We love our props guys. Awesome job. So I just love this because like little kids hate, a lot of little kids hate sand. A lot of grownups hate sand. You're creating a little safe play area or a place to eat your lunch. All you do is bring a fitted sheet. You're not adding to your load. It's not extra stuff to bring. One little thing, a fitted sheet, you kind of lay it up, fold it up way, pull it up ways and put things in the corner that it's going to kind of tug around. And look at what you've got here. You've got a play area. You didn't spend any money. This is so cool. Isn't this great? I mean, I need to still figure out how to fold a fitted sheet. That's something that I'll never, just ball it up and put it in the drawer. How do you keep the sand from being in there? Well, you're gonna, you know, there's a little bit might get in there, but for the most part, the wind, you're protected from the sand blowing in as well. Okay, okay. It's good. All right, so now let's talk about sunscreen. How often should I reapply sunscreen, Lauren? Well, it's funny you should ask. I'm glad you asked. Every two hours. And we have a great hack for that because no one really remembers it, okay? Derms tell us every two hours, set your phone for like, say, hey Siri, and now everyone's phones are going off. Hey Siri, give me a timer for two hours. And then every two hours, you put on a shot glass worth, you know this, a shot glass for your body, a nickel size for your face, 30 minimum. And also remember that clothes are the best SPF. So if you've got a cute coverup and a great hat, that helps you there too. So what about those personal items? How do you keep those safe? Like the iPhone and your charger. Also funny you should ask. Don't tell me it's the shoe, which is the first place you're going to look if you're a thief. Okay, exactly. So we love a resealable plastic baggie. These things are watertight. They're gonna protect it from sand. You've got them in the house. You're ready to go. But if you want the ultimate, this is the best. This is a waterproof case that you can put your phone in, you can put your charger in, and you can carry it with you. And you can use it when you're out in the water. Don't drop it. But also like this, well this you can actually shoot. I'm not sure if you can shoot. You can shoot through this one actually. Some of them you can shoot through, but what it really does is mean no one has to stay back at the towels and protect, like guard your stuff. You've got it all with you. And wait, you can shoot while that thing is on? They have, so I'm not sure if this is the one that you can. That's cool, because that's my wife, which is like, you're gonna get the phone wet when you're sitting in the ocean, like trying to get the perfect shot. I know you also can use it through, so like have an emergency call come in or something like that. You'll see it, so there's a little bit of added safety there. But really, we're all just about like having a good time at the beach. We do not want bad things to happen. We want you to have a great time. So take these little precautions, protect your stuff, protect yourself and your family, and you will have the most wonderful time at the beach. Especially with whatever's in that cooler. Yeah.
