Argentina's libertarian President Javier Milei has scored a surprise victory in the country's congressional midterm elections, which serve as a test of public opinion. The results provide a boost for Milei's radical free-market economic policies.

These results give Milei enough support to uphold presidential vetoes, resist impeachment, and advance his proposed tax and labor reforms. 

The election was influenced by a significant US currency swap package, with former President Trump claiming his endorsement contributed to Milei's victory. While Milei's economic policies have reduced inflation, austerity measures have caused hardship for many Argentines. The opposition criticized the government's celebration, noting low voter turnout and widespread disagreement with the country's economic direction.

The Argentine people have decided to leave behind 100 years of decline and persevere on the path of freedom, progress and growth. Today we reached a turning point. Today begins the construction of a great Argentina. The remarkable results mean Millet will have enough support in Congress to uphold presidential vetoes, fend off any impeachment effort and push through his ambitious tax and labour reforms. The kids voted, democracy voted, the country voted and this changes the entire situation in Argentina, the entire economy at the national level. All of this is beautiful. Everything that's happening is bringing joy to people. Look at what the people of Argentina wanted. We wanted security. We wanted to change the Congress that's been the same for years while our children suffer. A massive US bailout package dangled another carrot for Argentine voters. President Trump signed a $20 billion currency swap to stabilise the temperamental peso with the offer of the same amount again if his party won this election. Trump says his endorsement helped Millet win by such a large margin. I want to congratulate the victor and he was a big victor and he had a lot of help from us. Two years into his economic overhaul, Millet has succeeded in reducing inflation from triple to double digits but the associated austerity measures left many Argentines struggling to make ends meet. The opposition party said the government was mistaken for celebrating and given historically poor voter turnout, say six out of ten voters disagree with Argentina's economic direction.
