A recent study from Stanford economists highlights the impact of generative artificial intelligence on the workforce, with a focus on early career workers in highly exposed fields such as coding and call centers. The research found that these workers have experienced a roughly 13% decline in employment since the widespread adoption of large language models like ChatGPT.

In contrast, employment for more experienced workers in the same fields has remained stable or grown, attributed to their tacit knowledge that AI systems are less likely to replicate. The study also notes that when AI is used to augment work, rather than replace it, employment growth can outpace the average, suggesting that familiarity with AI tools may be beneficial for workers.

I'm learning a lot of coding through programming language, which is becoming something AI can do very quickly. Among the report's main findings is that early career workers in the most AI exposed jobs like coders and people who work in call centers have experienced a roughly 13% decline in employment since the widespread adoption of generative AI. That includes large language models or LLMs like ChatGPT. That kind of double digit decline was really striking and actually a little unexpected to me how stark it was. And get this director of the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, Eric Brynjolfsson added that employment for more experienced workers in the same occupations has remained stable or continue to grow. The folks who are on the job, they get a lot of tacit knowledge, tricks of the trade that they learn. It's never been written down before. Well, the LLMs, they mostly absorb a lot of written language. And so there may be a little bit more of an overlap for stuff that people learn from reading. Whereas the tacit knowledge is something that the LLMs are less likely to have as much of. Now, it's not all doom and gloom. Another finding is that the use of AI to augment work actually led to faster employment growth than average. Some people go to LLMs, go to these large language models and ask them, hey, teach me how to do this new skill. Show me how to make a better presentation. Help me learn something. When people were using it that way, we actually saw an increase in employment. The bottom line, according to researchers, get familiar with AI. This report has a ton of additional information in it.
