While the attack itself was real, several videos and documents circulating online falsely linked migrants to the incident. Authorities confirmed that these materials were either unrelated to the event or entirely fabricated, including videos from other locations and a fake document claiming official support for anti-migrant protests. The spread of this disinformation contributed to the escalation of violence, resulting in injuries to residents of foreign origin and multiple arrests.

These images are real and show the gravity of the pensioner's injuries as a result of the attack. But this video, which has been circulating widely online, claiming to show the attack, is unrelated as confirmed by both the victim and the local authorities. It's since emerged that the video shows a separate attack on this man from Almería, a city some 200km away from Torrepacheco. Here, the man holds up items of clothing that correspond to those seen in the video. Since the attack, tensions have spilled over into violent anti-migrant riots. Residents of foreign origin, including minors, have been injured by violent groups roaming the streets. At least 14 arrests have been made. Online disinformation has fuelled this violence. For example, users have claimed this video shows migrants attacking another elderly man in the town, but this in fact happened in Mexico in 2021. And this video doesn't show people throwing objects at police in the town as they're being arrested. It's a separate, unrelated incident in another Spanish province. This fake document claims to show the local authority convening a protest against the situation of insecurity in the municipality after the attack, describing migration as the common denominator of criminal incidents. But this document is fake. The local authority has denied it ever existed. There was a congregation against recent criminal acts, as seen in this poster, but there was no mention of migration as being a common denominator in those incidents.
