Health officials are raising concerns that rising temperatures, driven by climate change, are increasing health risks for pregnant women. As summers become hotter, pregnant women may struggle to regulate body heat, making them more susceptible to dehydration and, in severe cases, early labor. Research from Climate Central indicates that women in the US now experience an average of 12 more extremely hot days, which is associated with a higher risk of preterm birth and infant mortality.

Despite these risks, a review of state health websites found that most provide little or no information specifically addressing heat risks for pregnant women. Only eight states offer targeted warnings, while the majority offer only basic heat safety tips or none at all. Health experts and expectant mothers are calling for more comprehensive information and support to help manage these growing risks.

Hey, how you doing? Good, how are you during pregnancy? The body loses some of its ability to regulate heat. That can lead to dehydration and in extreme cases early labor. Doctor Catherine Principe is crows OBGYN in Fort Worth. Is that something that you ever think about where we're seeing patients coming into the triage area with preterm contractions from dehydration a little bit earlier in the pregnancy? And a little bit earlier in the year and lasting and maybe a little bit later into October. New research from the nonprofit Climate Central looked at the connection between climate change and pregnancy and found women in the US now experienced 12 additional extremely hot days, leading to a greater risk of preterm birth and infant mortality. I feel like they don't have the knowledge. Public health researcher Robin Stassen was surprised at how little heat risk information states offer for pregnant women. In her research, she found that 11 state health websites didn't have information on heat risks. 31 states in DC offered basic heat safety tips, but nothing on pregnancy, and only eight states had specific warnings about heat and pregnancy. How could states not be talking about it? Yeah, that's a good question. I think people are now actually recognizing that heat is an issue. Climate change is happening. Expectant mom Megan Crowe says women deserve more information about the dangers they face. Is really concerning if things are getting worse that. It's going to be harder for us to do so to stay on top of the healthy pregnancy, and that was David Schechter reporting from Dallas where it was 94 degrees today.
