Unfit to serve, that's what Senate Republicans said about America's 46th President Joe Biden during the first public hearing on his mental capacity. It was the auto-pin presidency, a government run by committee rather than a leader chosen by the American people. Republicans alleged a massive cover-up of the president's cognitive decline. They demanded answers about who was really calling the shots in the final years of the Biden presidency. Was it his wife? His chief of staff? None of these people were elected by the American people. Senators hauled in former Trump press secretary Sean Spicer to talk about the role of White House aides monitoring a president's fitness. Others questioned if the vice president and cabinet can deploy the 25th amendment to oust a president not up to the job. The 25th amendment lays out clear procedures for what to do when the president is incapacitated. The Biden administration ignored it all. Most Democrats boycotted Wednesday's hearing but those who did attend pushed back on the GOP allegations. That included ranking Democrat Dick Durbin. He accused his colleagues of armchair diagnosing the former president. He also questioned Republican priority. So far this year the Republican majority in this committee has not held a single oversight hearing despite numerous critical challenges facing the nation that are under our jurisdiction.
