President Trump claims Israel and Hamas are one step closer to reaching a ceasefire. The president wrote in part on Truth Social yesterday, quote, Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60-day ceasefire. He added, quote, I hope for the good of the Middle East that Hamas takes this deal because it will not get better, it will only get worse. CBS News chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes joins us now. Nancy, thanks for being with us. How have Israel and Hamas responded to the president's announcement? And does the Trump administration see this evolving into a lasting peace? Well, Meg, while the president has framed this as a breakthrough, saying that Israel has agreed to the necessary framework, Israeli officials themselves have been a little more circumspect. We've gotten some mixed messages from them on whether they have actually accepted this framework or not. And Hamas is still holding out. Hamas officials are saying that they're working very responsibly to try to achieve some kind of ceasefire. They're not walking away from the table, but they're not embracing this framework either. And so you saw the president in that statement last night, Meg, saying, as you pointed out, that Hamas better take this deal because the terms are not going to get better for Hamas. They're only going to get worse. The question is whether language like that is really going to be enough to force Hamas to sign off, because as we've seen time and time again, there have been examples where the White House says the Israelis are on board, issues threats to Hamas that they need to get on board as well. And often those threats tend to fall on deaf ears. Nancy, let's switch gears a little bit and go back to the budget bill, which is held up in the House. How is the president trying to win over those remaining Republican holdouts? Well, he's been meeting with them in person and he's been arguing that that some of their concerns are unfounded or that they, you know, they need to get comfortable with the idea that they're not going to get everything they want because this train is leaving the station. Even brought in his director of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, Dr. Oz, to talk to these members who really span the ideological gamut. You've got moderates who have a problem with the bill as it came over from the House. You've got conservatives who have issues. And he's really spent the day, blocked off the day, to talk with them. He didn't have anything else on his public schedule, which is an indication of the fact that time is really of the essence. Republicans are hoping that they can pass this before the July 4th holiday, but time is running short. And so the president is really hoping to get this over the finish line because it contains one of his major priorities, which is extending his tax cuts that he got passed in his first administration. And so if there are things that various Republicans don't like, he's basically arguing they should swallow it for the greater good. Time is running short, as you mentioned. Nancy, you also have reporting on the Trump administration's decision to pause some weapons shipments to Ukraine. What more can you tell us? Yes. So this was something that we confirmed yesterday, that some weapons shipments that were supposed to go out to Ukraine, as they have been for years now, were halted by the Pentagon. And initially, we were told that that is because there were concerns at the Pentagon about the stockpile of those weapons. They want to make sure that the U.S. has enough. And so they were pausing the shipment. We've continued to ask questions, both here at the White House. Our colleagues have been asking questions at the Pentagon about how long this pause is going to last, whether this only affects Ukraine or other countries as well. What we've been told is that this is part of a larger review that has been taking place for weeks at the Pentagon, at the direction of the president, to ensure that weapons shipments to many countries are falling in line with the president's priorities and his America first agenda. However, that doesn't answer the question of whether this signals a longer-term shift in policy towards Ukraine and when the shipments to Ukraine will resume. We're still waiting for those details.
