House Republicans are scrambling to meet President Trump's self-imposed Independence Day deadline for his "big, beautiful" budget bill. CBS News' Caitlin Huey-Burns has the latest.

House Republicans are working to pass a budget bill before President Trump's self-imposed deadline, but face significant internal disagreements. Some members object to the Senate's version of the bill, citing concerns about increased deficit spending and insufficient spending cuts, while others are worried about deep cuts to Medicaid and changes to tax deductions.

Efforts to resolve these disputes include last-minute meetings at the White House, with President Trump personally engaging lawmakers. Procedural votes are underway, but travel delays caused by severe weather have complicated attendance. The deadline is considered arbitrary, but leadership remains determined to meet it before the congressional recess.

House Republicans scramble to meet budget bill deadline

But we begin on Capitol Hill. The House officially has less than 48 hours to pass a budget. They could soon vote as early as in the next hour or so, but one Republican is calling the Senate version of the bill, quote, a nonstarter. Another is asking to delete and replace the language of the bill in its entirety. Both House leaders, though, are standing their ground. Listen. I encouraged them to amend it as lightly as possible. They went a little further than many of us would have preferred. But we have the product now, and my objective and my responsibility is to get that bill over the line. Shame on Senate Republicans for passing this disgusting abomination, and shame on House Republicans for continuing to bend the knee to Donald Trump's extreme agenda. CBS News' Caitlin Huey Burns is on Capitol Hill for us this morning, and she joins me now from the Hill. Caitlin, Speaker Johnson and others were working well into the night on this bill. Have they calmed any of those concerns yet? Not yet, Vlad. It's good to see you. And that is going to be the job of President Trump today. He has actually invited several Republican lawmakers who are holding out on this bill over to the White House to try to twist their arms at the last minute here. He's been able to do it before, and House leadership is hoping that he will be able to do it again. Here are a couple ways to kind of think about this. You've got some ultra-conservative members who are concerned about this Senate version of the bill, namely that it adds a trillion more dollars to the deficit, according to a nonpartisan CBO report, than the House version does. They also think it doesn't cut enough spending, doesn't cut as much as the House version does. Then Vlad, you've got some moderates who are concerned about these deep cuts to Medicaid, deeper on the Senate side version than on the House side. Also, some concerns about lowering the state and local tax deduction and those kinds of items. We are still deep in the sausage-making process here with just a couple of days before the president's arbitrary July 4th deadline. So today is all about the wrangling. As you see on your screen there, they are starting voting on all the procedural kinds of hurdles that they have to do before they can actually get to the bill. Vlad, I should note that the biggest issue facing these lawmakers today is travel. The weather in Washington last night was terrible. Lots of thunderstorms, delayed, canceled lots of flights. Some lawmakers were driving as many as 14 hours to get here. So a lot of travel delays could actually be the thing that impacts today's vote. So what's the possibility then, Caitlin, of hitting that July 4th deadline? Well, House Speaker Mike Johnson has been adamant this whole time. They're going to make this deadline. The president said it. They want to reach it. But I should note that this is a arbitrary deadline. It is something that the president himself wanted, the July 4th deadline, a patriotic deadline. But it really has no bearing on this actual legislation. It's not like it needs to be passed by then. But the other thing to keep in mind about Capitol Hill, if you don't have any sort of deadline, you're just going to be waiting forever, the longer this drags out. So that's also kind of facing Republican leaders here. The president wants this done, so they want it done, and especially before the July 4th recess. All right.
