The most important ingredient in Christmas cookies isn't the flour or the sugar -- it's the love and care that go into baking them. Major Garrett has more.

In Huntington, Pennsylvania, a community initiative called 'Cookies for Caregivers' began during the pandemic when two residents, Scott McKenzie and Jeremy Oreck, started baking and delivering cookies to first responders. Their friendly bake-off led to an outpouring of support, with others joining to help distribute cookies to a wide range of essential workers, including those at the post office, funeral homes, and the Humane Society.

Unlike many pandemic-era projects, this effort continued beyond the end of the pandemic, with the group delivering over 1,200 cookies to date. The initiative aims to make recipients feel seen, respected, and valued, demonstrating the power of small acts of kindness in fostering community spirit.

I put a picture of them on Facebook and my buddy Jeremy here. Criticized my cookies by challenging me saying that he could probably make better cookies. A bake off ensued and with too many for them to eat by themselves, they delivered the rest to first responders. Others in town found out and wanted to help too and cookies for caregivers was born. It gave our community members a purpose. Yeah, they're at home. They enjoy baking a few dozen cookies. It's not a lot of work. Many COVID era groups ended when the pandemic did, but they pressed on. At first we wanted to talk to the essential workers and then Jeremy and I kind of said what workers aren't essential so then it became how can we reach everybody in Huntington County? Everybody from the post office to funeral homes to the Humane Society. I've got goodies for you. I think there's such a need for people to feel seen and to feel respected and to feel valued.
