It was a very difficult and dangerous rescue mission because the water flow was very strong. They carried out a daring rescue and succeeded in saving lives. But for dozens of others across Pakistan, the heavy monsoon rains have proven fatal, be it from caved-in homes or the sudden rising water levels or the rapid currents. For some Pakistanis, the authorities are not doing enough to help people. What can we do besides bailing out water and relocating our families to safer areas? But the authorities haven't lifted a finger. We're left to fend for ourselves. The situation is dire, just like every year. Amidst forecasts of continued extreme rainfall, authorities say that they cannot rule out the possibility of floods like those of 2022. They submerged a third of the country and killed over 1,700 people. For Pakistan's neediest, there is often a sense of powerlessness. Every year, the water comes. All the crops are destroyed. Our houses collapse. There are no riverbanks and we have no protection at all. While monsoon season is vital for agriculture, climate change has been shifting weather patterns. And Pakistan's 255 million people are increasingly vulnerable to these heavy rains.
