Wildfires have swept through several coastal towns near Athens, destroying dozens of homes and prompting the evacuation of more than 50 people from five villages. High temperatures and strong winds have contributed to the spread of the fires, making efforts to contain them challenging for local authorities.

Firefighting forces, including aircraft, helicopters, and Coast Guard boats, have been deployed to battle the flames. Greece is experiencing a particularly fire-prone period, with multiple fires reported across the country and a record number of firefighters mobilized in anticipation of a difficult wildfire season.

More than 50 people had to be evacuated from five villages in the area. Back on the scene, the inhabitants are distraught. We escaped unscathed, but not the house, which suffered so much damage. It's really very sad. We have to remain vigilant because, as you can see, there are still small fires. The fires broke out around midday Thursday in a seaside region 50 km south of Athens. It's a popular vacation spot for residents of the Greek capital. Many have second homes here. High temperatures and strong winds fanned the flames. To fight the blaze, a large firefighting force was deployed, including a dozen aircraft, helicopters and boats from nearby Coast Guard stations. So far, it's been a major struggle to extinguish the flames. Dozens of houses were destroyed. We do not know the extent of the damage. This is a very fire-prone period in Greece. Dozens of other fires have broken out at the same time throughout the country. Last summer, 45,000 hectares went up in smoke. This year, Greece has increased its number of firefighters to a record 18,000 in anticipation of another difficult wildfire season.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv will do "anything" to advance EU accession talks. Zelenskyy spoke alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
