At 37 years old, Harris is set to become Ireland's youngest Prime Minister, or Taoiseach, when Parliament returns from Easter break in April. Harris joined Fine Gael's youth wing aged 16 and was elected to Parliament eight years later. Serving as Health Minister during the start of the pandemic, Harris received praise for his communication skills, despite heavy criticism over nursing home deaths and occasional gaffes. He was also embroiled in controversy over new hospital projects and a state cover-up of incorrect cervical cancer checks. Harris now faces the task of reinvigorating Fine Gael ahead of local and European Parliament elections in ten weeks and an Irish general election due by March 2025. For the last three years, polls have put the left-wing nationalist party Sinn Féin as the favourite to head the next government.
