The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is under strain, with both parties accusing each other of violations. Israeli forces killed nine Palestinian civilians after a vehicle was deemed an imminent threat. In recent exchanges, Hamas returned two more hostage bodies, and Israel released over 1,700 detainees. However, some detainees, including Dr. Hassam Abu Safir, remain in custody without charge, and Israel has extended his detention. The ongoing conflict continues to impact civilians and detainees on both sides.

The ceasefire is still holding, but only just. Both sides accuse the other of violations. Nine Palestinian civilians have been killed after Israeli forces opened fire on a vehicle they say posed an imminent threat when it came too close to them. And Israel is insisting all the remaining hostage bodies must be returned as Hamas searches for them beneath the rubble of Gaza. In exchange, Israel released more than 1,700 detainees to scenes of jubilation this past week. But for Haitham Salem, a university professor, freedom brought no joy. The prison guard said I was detained just as a number, he told us, to be exchanged for hostages held for just under a year. He describes being repeatedly beaten and tortured, only to finally be released into another kind of hell. He learned his wife and three children had been killed one month earlier in an Israeli strike. My heart is aching. Look at my children. There were also detainees who were not set free, amongst them Dr. Hassam Abu Safir, the director of a hospital in northern Gaza. He's been held without charge for nearly a year, and Israel has just extended his detention, via further six months.
