We're all very moved because we've been here for a long time. What can I say? Greece is progressing slowly. 176 MPs of the 300-seat parliament voted in favor of the bill. While same-sex unions were authorized in Greece in 2015, this law now gives full marital status to same-sex couples, including parental rights. It stopped short, though, of surrogacy use, which is otherwise allowed. For the Greek prime minister, the bill, which was passed by a cross-party majority, is a big step forward. Greece is proud to become the 16th EU country to legislate marriage equality. This is a milestone for human rights, reflecting today's Greece, a progressive and democratic country passionately committed to European values. Prior to becoming law, the bill faced pushback and protests. The Orthodox Christian Church is staunchly against same-sex marriages. The law makes Greece the first Orthodox country to legalize marriage for all couples.

Prospects for a Gaza ceasefire appeared slim as Hamas reiterated its demand for an end to the war in exchange for the freeing of hostages, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flatly ruled that out.
