First day back at school after the Christmas break in the tiny town of Perry, Iowa, and a scene so gruesomely familiar in this country. It was a text message this morning from my daughter, and it was absolutely horrifying. Like, that's one of the worst moments of my entire life. Her stepdaughter had been grazed by a bullet, but survived. Four students and a school administrator were wounded, a sixth grader killed. The calls for help rang out just after 7.30 in the morning. A 17-year-old, say police armed with a shotgun and a handgun, had walked in and started shooting. Police arrived seven minutes later. The shooter died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. Police are now examining his social media posts. There is no further danger to the public. The community is safe. We're just now working backwards, trying to figure out everything that happened and make notifications. Four days into 2024, it follows a record high year in the U.S. for school shootings, which in turn had followed record highs both years prior. And the question that we ask is, when will enough be enough? There has long been broad support in this country for toughening federal gun laws, but resistance by enough lawmakers to mostly block that, who often point to mental health issues as the key factor in gun deaths. The U.S. remains far and away the global leader in gun deaths annually, more than 40,000 last year alone. Our hearts are heavy today and our prayers are with the Perry community. This strikes at the heart of everything that we hold dear. And even with this latest grieving, few expect anything will soon change on this in America.
