Moreover, the bill extends its reach by criminalizing public displays of affection among members of the LGBTQ+ community, with some offenses carrying prison sentences of more than a decade.

Gay sex is already illegal in Ghana, carrying a maximum prison sentence of three years. The bill now also imposes up to five years in jail for those advocating for LGBTQ rights. Opposition lawmaker Sam George, the main sponsor of the bill, urged the president to assent to it. There is nothing that deals with LGBTQ better than this bill that has just been passed by parliament. We expect the president to walk his talk and be a man of his words. Ghana is among many African countries that have restrictive policies against LGBTQ communities. According to the ILGA, around 30 African countries currently ban homosexuality. In Mauritania, Nigeria, Uganda and Somalia, those in same-sex relationships could face the death penalty. South Africa is the only country on the continent allowing gay marriage, which Ghana's president has said he will never allow while in office. Observers say the bill is unlikely to be validated before a general election at the end of the year.

Prospects for a Gaza ceasefire appeared slim as Hamas reiterated its demand for an end to the war in exchange for the freeing of hostages, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flatly ruled that out.
