Holocaust survivor Eva Cepesi helped to the lectern by the German president. Although 91 years old, she still recalls the moment darkness descended on a happy childhood. Then one of my best friends shouted, look at it, look at this piece of bloody meat. Your father's blood will be shed just like that. My father, who was walking to me, saw the tears in my eyes. He gave me a tight hug. I know, your best friends, that hurts. Someone has incited them to turn against us. It's not their fault. Cepesi is among the dwindling number of people still alive to tell the tale of how Nazis gained power and used it to murder millions of Jews, Roma and other minorities. The Shoah did not begin with Auschwitz. It began with words. It began with society staying silent and looking away. This year's service comes at a time when far-right forces are gaining momentum in Germany. It appalls me that right-wing extremist parties are again being voted for. They must not become so strong that our democracy is endangered. The focus of this year's service is intergenerational remembrance, on ensuring that the memories of the victims live on. The final word went to Marcel Reif. His father was rescued from a train bound for Auschwitz. He passed on this advice to his son. I would like to leave you with this small, wonderful sentence, the legacy from my father, Leon Reif. Be a Mensch. Be a good person.
