The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have installed yellow concrete markers in Gaza to delineate areas under their control, physically marking boundaries that restrict the movement of Palestinian residents. While these markers clarify the limits for residents, they have also resulted in people being cut off from their homes and increased difficulties in daily life.

Despite a ceasefire, people living near the yellow line report persistent fear due to ongoing violence, including gunfire and shelling. Israel's defense minister has stated that a free fire policy is in effect along the line, following the deaths of two IDF soldiers in Rafah, further intensifying the sense of insecurity for those in the area.

A line on a map starts to take on a physical form. The IDF are installing these yellow concrete markers to indicate to the Palestinian population where the areas under their control begin. Even though the markers make clearer for residents the limits of where they can go, it continues to cut people off from their homes. We can't wait for the second phase so that we can get rid of this issue and for the bodies to be handed over and for the crossings to open for anyone who wishes to travel and for those who want to come back. And until the next stage of the peace process is reached, if it is reached, little is likely to change. Weeks into the ceasefire and those living close to the line have had little peace. There's fear. It's there 24 hours a day. There are quadcopters, gunshots, shells fired at us to drive us away and displace us. But we have nowhere else to go. So we have to stay here with my family. Israel's defence minister has made clear there's a free fire policy along the line after two IDF soldiers were attacked and killed last month in the southern city of Rafa.
