Displaced residents in Gaza have expressed cautious hope as the second phase of a US-brokered ceasefire agreement begins. Many, still living in makeshift shelters after the destruction of their homes, report little improvement in daily life since the ceasefire took effect in October 2025, with most of the population remaining displaced and hundreds of deaths reported.

The second phase focuses on reconstruction and humanitarian relief, but progress has been slow. Key issues such as clearing rubble, rebuilding homes, deploying an international stabilisation force, disarming Hamas, and the withdrawal of Israeli military forces from Gaza remain unresolved, leaving many Gazans uncertain about the future.

He like many Gazans welcomed the announcement about the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, but remains uncertain about what could come next. What do we expect? Everything we want and need is beyond what we will be provided. We need a caravan, a mobile home to protect us from winter and the cold. But if you ask what we think will happen, we don't know yet. We're not optimistic about anything. Based on the chaos, daily bombings, martyrs, gunfire, targeting, there's no expectation of improvement, unfortunately. The ceasefire officially took hold in October 2025. Since then, Palestinians have reported the deaths of around 400 people. In phase one, all living hostages held by Hamas were returned to Israel and hundreds of Palestinians held in Israeli prisons were released. The body of one hostage is yet to be repatriated. But there has been little improvement to the daily lives of citizens in Gaza, with most of the population still displaced. Bombing and reconstruction, part of phase two, are also this Palestinian mother's main concern. She currently lives with her children in a makeshift tent on the street. God willing, there'll be a difference from the phase we're currently in, or an improvement to our living conditions. I hope phase two starts with reconstruction, and that they'll rebuild our house, so my children don't have to live on the street any longer. I have five young children, and we struggle out here on the street. The UN estimates that more than 61 million tons of rubble need to be cleared, and that rebuilding could take many years. There's hope that the new technocratic Palestinian administrative body, which met for the first time in Egypt this week, will be able to move things forward. It will be overseen by the International Board of Peace. Many key issues in Gaza are dependent on the completion of phase two. Announcing the start of phase two is important, but Palestinians see slow progress so far. Other steps of the plan remain unresolved. The deployment of an international stabilisation force, which has yet to be formed, the disarmament of Hamas, and the timeline for a further withdrawal of the Israeli military, which holds half of Gaza's territory, is still unclear.
