The first day of Ramadan came and went in Gaza, with residents marking a joyless iftar against a backdrop of famine, disease and displacement as the war in the besieged territory grinds on more than five months after it began.

The beginning of Ramadan in Gaza was marked by a somber atmosphere rather than the usual festive spirit associated with the month. Residents observed iftar, the meal to break their fast, amidst challenging conditions including famine, disease, and displacement. These conditions are a result of the ongoing conflict in the territory, which has continued for more than five months.

The protracted war has significantly impacted the daily lives of Gazans, overshadowing traditional celebrations and activities during Ramadan. The lack of "joy of Ramadan" is attributed to the severe humanitarian issues facing the territory, further exacerbated by the siege that it has been under.



Gazans break fast without 'joy of Ramadan'

As evening approached after the first day of Ramadan, refugees in a crowded tent city in southern Gaza prepared to break fast. But what would normally be a large celebratory feast was decidedly muted after months of violence, rationing and privation. For me, Ramadan now means nothing, absolutely nothing. Even Eid, which is coming, will be the worst and darkest. Isn't Ramadan supposed to be blessed? Unfortunately, we're not living the life of Ramadan, we're living a life of war. Around 80 percent of Gaza's 2.3 million people have been displaced, and more than half of them have crammed into the far south around the town of Rafa. With only a trickle of supplies entering the territory, hunger is rampant. Efforts by Qatar, Egypt and the United States to broker a ceasefire before Ramadan proved fruitless, leaving the people of Gaza still threatened by bombs. The Hamas-run health ministry reported on Monday that more than 31,100 Palestinians have been killed since the war began in October. Survivors said Ramadan is a time to give thanks for being alive. The first day of Ramadan, thank God we have this iftar here on the ruins. We have no homes, no furniture left for us, nothing is left for us. Many Muslims would spend time praying in a mosque after breaking fast, but Israeli bombardments have destroyed about 1,000 of Gaza's 1,200 mosques. Thus, people prayed in the street, creating community in the rubble.

The US military has started building a large floating pier off Gaza's coast to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid, the defence department has said. Ships will deliver aid from Cyprus to the pier where it will be loaded onto trucks to transfer across Gaza.
