Hospitals in Gaza are facing severe challenges as ongoing conflict has left them overwhelmed and critically short of resources. Medical staff are forced to prioritise the most urgent cases, often turning away those who are not in immediate danger due to a lack of space, medicine, and functioning equipment. Essential treatments, such as dialysis, have been scaled back, and some patients are unable to access life-saving care.

The lack of fuel has led to widespread power outages, further limiting the ability of hospitals to operate. Many departments have closed, and only a few remain functional. According to local reports, more than 58,600 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began, with additional deaths likely unrecorded due to the collapse of the healthcare system.

Gaza doctors make difficult decisions about who to treat

If you are not heavily bleeding, you have to wait. This is Gaza, where basic medical care is becoming a luxury. Hospitals are overwhelmed, leaving medical staff forced to prioritise the most critical injuries, as Israel's bombardment continues. Before the war, I used to receive dialysis three times a week, with each session lasting four hours. At that time, the situation was stable, the treatment was effective, and we would return home feeling well and rested. Now we can barely make the journey to the hospital, particularly that we are not eating well. Now the dialysis schedule at Al Shifa Hospital has been scaled down to shorter and less frequent sessions. For some, it's a matter of life and death. The journey here is long and costly. After all this exhaustion, we sometimes can't find treatment. I have heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. Even the medicine we get is not good. What should we do? Die at home? This child's mother says he's suffering from severe malnutrition and only weighs 10 kilograms. She says there is no space for him at the ICU, no medicine or doctors to help him. Doctors say they have to make difficult choices, prioritizing patients. They also have to scale back operations to the minimum. No fuel means no power and no way to save lives. Only a few departments are working. We had to cut electricity to the rest. The hospital's yards turned into graveyards rather than a place of care and healing. Without electricity, there is no lighting, no functioning medical equipment and no support for other essential services. More than 58,600 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's attacks since the beginning of the war. This number doesn't include the deaths caused by the lack of access to essential medical services. Many here have survived hunger, repeated forest displacement and relentless Israeli bombings only to be deprived of basic medical care.
