Staff are now relying on mobile phone flashlights to provide care, and only emergency, maternity, and pediatric departments remain open, powered by a small rented generator.

The hospital, which handles up to 1,000 patients daily and is the main maternity center in the region, has hundreds of patients waiting for postponed procedures. Hospital officials warn that even the remaining services may soon be forced to close if fuel supplies are not urgently delivered, putting health care for central Gaza residents at increasing risk.

At Al-Aouda Hospital in central Gaza, darkness has become routine. With fuel supplies critically low, staff are now relying on mobile phone flashlights to work, checking equipment, examining patients, and keeping only the most essential services running. The hospital, which normally treats up to 1,000 patients a day, says it's been forced to suspend most services as generators run out of diesel. The real crisis facing Al-Aouda Hospital is a fuel shortage. There are no signs of any hope or positive developments that large quantities of fuel would be available today or tomorrow to refill the hospital's tanks and storage facilities. Only emergency care, maternity, and pediatrics remain operational. To keep those departments open, the hospital has had to rent a small generator. But with the large number of patients, that may not be enough. It's the main maternity hospital in the central region, with 40 to 50 births per day, and a monthly average of 1,250 to 1,500, and we perform about 40 surgeries per day. Hundreds of patients are already waiting for postponed procedures, while others are being turned away. There are hundreds of patients scheduled on waiting lists, in addition to other services including pediatrics, emergency units, and outpatient wards. Hospital officials are appealing for urgent fuel deliveries, warning that even the services still running may not last.
