The incident highlighted ongoing concerns about the reliability of the CBSA's aging IT systems. The public safety minister has ordered a report on the outage and a plan to prevent future disruptions. Trucking industry representatives have called for urgent investment in border technology to support the daily flow of over $3 billion in goods and services between Canada and the United States.

The trucks are moving again but the IT outage that paralyzed the Canada Border Service Agency this week was another shock to Canada's cross-border traffic. It seems to be happening more frequently, more than it was before anyways. Yves Duran tried to return to Ontario Wednesday night but was stuck in his truck at a rest stop for more than 30 hours. They were letting maybe 10, 15, 20 trucks at a time go through and they would just process it manually. CBSA staff couldn't process electronic forms because of a system outage. Officials say it started Sunday following routine maintenance. Even after it came back online there was a second outage on Thursday creating delays at airports across the country while backlog from Sunday's outage continued. This week drivers waited up to five hours crossing into Canada for Manitoba, eight hours in Michigan and up to 36 hours in New York. More than $3 billion in goods and services crossed between the two countries every day. At the mercy of a system Canadian trucking companies say is old, unreliable and needs to be fixed. The level of frustration in the industry has been growing I would say the last two to three years. The public safety minister has ordered the CBSA to deliver a report on the outage in 30 days that includes a plan to prevent future outages. Investing in the IT that facilitates Canada-U.S. trade by truck is a nation building exercise. It's just not as sexy as some of the others. Duran is now heading home to New Brunswick.
