The education sector is exasperated. Teachers are striking in Paris, Marseille, Rennes and Nantes upon the union's call to send a warning to the government. Their main demand is a pay rise, particularly among staff working with students with disabilities. They also want more recognition of the qualifications needed for their role, asking to raise the civil servant status from category C to category B. This would mean that assistants working with students with disabilities would need at least two years of higher education in addition to the baccalaureate, instead of just a national diploma obtained in the ninth grade. Another priority is the improvement of working conditions and fewer numbers of students per class, which teachers believe would make the job more appealing and raise the recruitment rate. The better the pay, the more teachers we'll recruit and then we'll be able to ensure that the students will have teachers present throughout the entire year. The sector's anger has been fanned by comments from their new education minister, Amélie Oudéa Castérat, who drew public criticism after moving her son from a state school to a privately funded school. She's a minister who shows a great deal of respect for public schools and their staff, but who doesn't recognise the scale of the serious crisis that we're facing. We're telling her schools are in crisis and she's facing it the other way. According to the teacher unions, the movement has mobilised 40 per cent of all teaching staff in the country and 65 per cent in Paris alone.
