France's opposition left-wing parties have decided to collaborate and nominate joint candidates in the upcoming snap parliamentary elections. The coalition, which includes socialists, ecologists, communists, and France Unbowed, aims to challenge both President Emmanuel Macron's Together coalition and Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally. The alliance will promote a unified programme focusing on social, ecological, and democratic issues.

The formation of this coalition comes after a period of tension among the parties. Last October, the socialists withdrew from the NUPEZ alliance due to disagreements with France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, specifically his refusal to condemn Hamas as a terrorist organization. Recently, Socialist First Secretary Olivier Faure accused Mélenchon of obstructing the formation of a left-wing alliance. Despite these past troubles, Faure has expressed a renewed commitment to the coalition, emphasizing a united front against the far right.

The alliance still faces several unresolved issues, including finalizing a policy list and selecting a leader. Previously led by Mélenchon, there is debate over whether he is too divisive for the role moving forward. Raphael Glucksmann has proposed that former union leader Laurent Berger should be considered as a potential prime minister in the event of a left-wing victory.



French left-wing parties reach agreement to team up

Celebrations outside the headquarters of France's Ecologist Party as the left presented a united front on Monday night, joining forces in order to challenge the far-right national rally as well as President Emmanuel Macron's Together coalition. We did it. We managed to reach an agreement. The socialists, ecologists, communists and France Unbowed announced that they wanted to put in place single candidacies in each constituency for the legislative elections on the 30th of June. This means we will be working together to put forward joint candidates in the first round of the parliamentary elections who will defend a programme that prioritises the urgent social, ecological and democratic battles. The unity comes as somewhat of a surprise. In October of last year, the socialists pulled out of the NUPEZ alliance created ahead of the 2022 elections. That decision followed the refusal of France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his inner circle to denounce Hamas as a terrorist organisation after the October 7th attacks. And just last month, Socialist First Secretary Olivier Faure accused Mélenchon of doing everything to make an alliance impossible between left-wing parties. Speaking on Monday, Faure seemed to have put those differences behind him. We are a country rising up today and saying no to the far right and yes to democracy, yes to the left. The union still need to hammer out a list of policies with many questions still unanswered. One of those is who will lead the alliance. It was Mélenchon two years ago but many now argue that he is too divisive to lead the union. On Monday, Raphael Glucksmann, who led the socialist list to third place in the recent European elections, suggested that in the event of a left-wing victory, it should be former union leader Laurent Berger named as prime minister.
