With a massive heatwave still hitting France, some French families are heading to the northwest of France - to Brittany - where temperatures have remained clement.

Brittany, traditionally known for its cooler and sometimes rainy weather, has become a popular destination for French families looking to escape the intense heatwave affecting much of the country. While temperatures in other regions have soared into the high 30s and 40s Celsius, Brittany has remained in the more comfortable 20s.

Tourists and campers from southern areas, such as Bordeaux and Vendée, have flocked to Brittany, seeking relief and the ability to enjoy outdoor activities. Local campsites have reported a noticeable rise in last-minute bookings, as visitors are drawn by both the region's natural beauty and its refreshing climate.

It's a region known for its beautiful beaches and its rain. But could Brittany, the westernmost tip of France, be in the midst of becoming an Eldorado for tourists seeking a cooler place to weather out a heatwave? This past week, many French tourists found refuge there, where the temperatures were in the 20 degrees Celsius rather than the high 30s and 40s. Sometimes it's nice when it's not sunny, especially with the weather we had last week. It can be horrible. I really don't like the heat. Apparently, it's 37 degrees Celsius where I live. If I were younger, I think I'd move to the region. These campers say that Brittany was a welcome escape from the sweltering heat further south, near Bordeaux, where they live. They're just back from a 17 kilometre hike. At home, it's 40 degrees. In that heat, you can't do anything but stay inside. You can't exercise. Many campsites say they've received lots of last-minute reservations. We've noticed a clientele from Vendée and from the south that's coming up north to us. Of course, it's for the beauty of the region, but also for fresh air. Thanks to its cool sea air, Brittany is fast becoming not a shunned place for its grey skies, but a welcome respite from heatwaves.
