French drama contends for top prize at Oscars

It's already won two Golden Globes, a Palme d'Or and six César Awards, but this Sunday French courtroom drama, Anatomy of a Fool, is contending for Hollywood's top prize at the Oscars. For Justine Trillet, who directed and co-wrote the film, the Best Picture nomination came as a huge surprise. I laughed and I cried after. Yes, it was, we could not expect this, you know, so it was very, very beautiful for us, of course. It's the first time since 2013 that a French film has received so many Oscar nominations. Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Director and Best Actress for Sandra Huller, a sweet revenge after it was snubbed by France's own selection committee, who decided against submitting it for Best International Feature. The courtroom drama now faces stiff competition. It's up against major blockbusters including Oppenheimer, Barbie or Killers of the Flower Moon. I think that Oppenheimer just about has a lock on Best Picture. Now there are some people out there who still feel like Poor Things and perhaps even Anatomy of a Fool might have a slim chance of slipping in. It's a very well-made film and it's a very well-performed film, particularly Sandra Huller, who of course is in Zone of Interest too. But there's one star that won't be hitting the red carpet this Sunday. Messi, the blue-eyed border collie who won viewers' hearts and the Belle Medogue for his role as Snoop, will be staying at home. After making a splash at the Oscars luncheon event and outshining even Ryan Gosling, speculation is that there was concern he'd steal the spotlight during the ceremony and give his film an unfair advantage during voting.

Prospects for a Gaza ceasefire appeared slim as Hamas reiterated its demand for an end to the war in exchange for the freeing of hostages, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flatly ruled that out.
