I have to say, it took probably more years to deliver this project than all the Brexit texts, because we launched it together with Prime Minister Theresa May at that time, during not a state visit but a summit a few years ago. But at the end of the day, we did it. In return, artefacts mainly from the Anglo-Saxon burial mounds at Sutton Hoo, one of England's most important archaeological sites, will be loaned to museums in Normandy. The 70-metre-long embroidery, widely thought to have been made in Kent, will go on display next autumn at the British Museum in London. It will stay there until July 2027 while its current home, the Bayeux Museum, is being refurbished. With 58 scenes and 626 characters, the tapestry offers an insight into the medieval period in Normandy and England, including military traditions and everyday life. Most famously, its stitching depicts the arrow which hit England's King Harold in the eye during the Norman invasion. Local authorities have welcomed the loan, but conservators have voiced concern over the risks of transporting the fragile work across the Channel.

The Trump administration branded the event as one of the steps it is taking to reshape its relationship with the African continent.
