French authorities and media organizations have raised alarms about the deteriorating conditions for journalists and civilians in Gaza. An open letter from AFP's Société des Journalistes described unprecedented hardships, including hunger and lack of basic necessities, affecting their staff on the ground. 

AFP has called on Israel to allow its collaborators and their families to leave Gaza, while France's foreign minister has demanded that international journalists be granted access to the region. Press freedom advocates have criticized the ongoing restrictions, noting that foreign media have largely been barred from Gaza except under controlled circumstances.

It's through footage like this that the world has witnessed the death, destruction and immeasurable suffering in the Gaza Strip. What some might forget is that those behind the camera are subject to the same dire conditions as the rest of the population. In recent days, the situation has reached new urgency, according to the French international news agency AFP. In an open letter, a group from the agency's Société des Journalistes said that since AFP was founded, it had lost journalists in conflicts and had some taken prisoner, but none of the employees could remember seeing a colleague die of hunger. The letter adds that even with a monthly salary, there's no food left to buy or only at exorbitant prices. Either they don't have money or they don't have food or they don't have clean water, which makes them sick. That's something very new we heard in the last day. They don't have the physical capacity to do their job anymore, they're so weak. AFP has urged Israel to allow its collaborators and their families to leave Gaza, an issue the French foreign minister said Paris was addressing. Speaking to the France Inter radio station on Tuesday, Jean-Noël Barrault also called for international journalists to be allowed entry to the Strip. It is equally unacceptable that the free and independent press does not have access to Gaza. I demand that the free and independent press be allowed access to Gaza to show what is happening there. Except on rare occasions and in which their coverage is controlled by the Israeli military, foreign press have been barred from entering Gaza since the start of the war. Reporters Without Borders has called the policy a methodical attempt to silence the facts and isolate the Palestinian press.
