France has started talks with some Niger army officials over withdrawing some troops from the African country following a coup in July, Le Monde reported on Tuesday.

But Le Monde is reporting that according to sources, discussions are now taking place about withdrawing French army units from Niger. Until now, France has rejected the idea of removing any of its soldiers from the country. Le Monde's report says that a month after coup leaders in Niger denounced enduring military cooperation agreements with France, discussions on the withdrawal of certain military elements have begun. Discussions reportedly have only taken place between the French and Nigerian military, not with coup leaders. Paris doesn't recognize the country's new military-appointed government. Some 1,500 French soldiers are currently deployed in the country at three military bases, one in Niamey, another in Oualam, north of the capital, and another in Euru, near the border with Mali. Some units, Le Monde reports, may be redeployed in the region, including in neighboring Tchad, or sent back to France. The former French president, François Hollande, speaking on France 24, said any pull-out would not be a failure. What is the problem? What harm is there? Withdrawing does not pose a difficulty of principle or question any supposed influence. Niger's military-appointed prime minister evoked discussions between Paris and Niamey on a French troop pull-out on Monday. He also commented on the economic sanctions imposed by the economic community of West African states. Eco was saying a solution was imminent. Eco was responded by saying it wasn't budging from its position, it rejects any discussion with Niger's coup leaders on a period of transition, and has threatened military intervention on several occasions.
