Today, flights departing Los Angeles were temporarily shut down due to a shortage of air traffic controllers, all of them working without pay. Now, as the government shutdown enters its fourth week, many Americans are already feeling the strain. Cars lined up in Pontiac, Michigan this week. Trunks open. It's helping us out a lot. We need this food. If the government shutdown continues, there will be less food out there. Christopher Ivey works with Forgotten Harvest, which collects surplus food and delivers it to hungry people. We're going to really have to lean into the community support that we need to be able to help us get through this difficult time. Nearly 13 percent of people in Michigan rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. They're among the nearly 42 million Americans who will see benefits slashed on November 1st if the government shutdown stretches on. On CBS's Face the Nation, Treasury Secretary Scott Besant called on Democrats to end the gridlock. I would urge moderate Democrats to be heroes, come across the aisle like they did in the spring and pass a clean CR. And former Vice President Kamala Harris weighing in, criticizing the president on the BBC for using private donations to build a ballroom during the shutdown. Right now we have a president in the Oval Office who is building a ballroom for his rich friends while he is depriving working people of health care. Now Democrats say they are willing to meet with Republicans on a plan that doesn't raise health care premiums. Meanwhile, air traffic controllers will be missing their first full paycheck on Tuesday.
