The Venice Carnival got underway this Sunday with a parade of boats down the city's Grand Canal, while a blanket of thick fog over the city failed to dampen the party spirit as revelers arrived.

Kicking off festivities, the giant papier-mâché rat, known as Pantagana, bursts into a cloud of balloons and confetti. The Venetian sewer rat is the leader of the annual procession down the city's Grand Canal, joined by a pack of revelers both by sea and on land. There is so much joy around. People want to have fun and most of all to respect the city. I've always liked carnival. I used to come as a child. It's always nice to come back. It's a dream I had as a child. The carnival has a special appeal, the clothes, dressing up, it's beautiful, a beautiful feeling. The Venice Carnival doesn't formally begin for another week, but the city decided to prolong the party. Revelers were already in the streets Saturday, with thick fog giving Venice an added air of mystery. This year's festival honors Venetian merchant and explorer Marco Polo on the 700th anniversary of his death. I have returned to Venice after 700 years and everyone is paying me homage, which is a very good sign. The fog today makes my city even more magical. My journey is destined to continue. The carnival tradition began centuries ago as a collective period of excess, ahead of the 40 days of Lent leading up to Easter. Carnival culminates with Mardi Gras on February 13th.
