Flash flooding hit Milwaukee and Waukesha counties as heavy rain pounded the area, forcing the Wisconsin State Fair to close early and disrupting events across the region.

Flash flooding in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties resulted in significant disruptions, including the early closure of the Wisconsin State Fair. Streets such as Cleveland Avenue experienced severe flooding, leaving several vehicles stranded and prompting authorities to warn residents to avoid driving through affected areas.

The storms brought heavy rainfall, lightning, and widespread power outages, with nearly 10,000 people in Milwaukee County and over 8,000 in Waukesha County losing electricity. The adverse weather also led to the cancellation of scheduled events at the fair, including a headline music performance, as officials continued to monitor conditions and urge public caution.

Flash flooding puts early end to Wisconsin State Fair

We start with that breaking news, a flash flood warning in effect for Milwaukee and Waukesha counties, and we are seeing serious flooding along the Root River. Our Kaylee Stahl is there and joins us live from the area of 1 17th and Cleveland. And Kaylee, boy, it looks like the street looks like a river behind you. Susan, you took the words right out of my mouth. You can see behind me. This is a street and Avenue. It is completely flooded right now, and we're going to step out so you can see behind me. But there is a car right here still on. And beyond that, I'm counting at least four cars that are stuck here in this road. Now this is on Cleveland Avenue. Firefighters here tell me this is between 112th and 118th. So if you're in the area, this is a place you definitely do not want to be. They're telling everyone to not drive through here right now. We've been here for about 30 minutes when we first got here. We saw some folks who had gotten their car out, but it was dead, and they were pushing it along the road. So clearly some damage there. We did reach out to West Alice police to see if there were any injuries. We're still waiting to hear back. But again, just to show you the severity that the whole road here is flooded. This is not something you want to be driving through. I know we're getting calls of this happening in other areas. Firefighters telling us here to stay out of the water, and we have reached out for more information. So, of course, we'll bring that to you. Just really encouraging everyone to stay off these roads right now and stay safe. Susan. All right, Kaylee Star reporting live for us. You guys stay safe as well. A remarkable scene from Wisconsin State Fair tonight. Heavy rain. This photo from Tessa shows the flooding up to the tires of that pickup truck off in the distance there on the state fair grounds. And then also Joe sent us a photo of a person standing in deep water also on the state fair grounds tonight. Now the storms folks forced state fair to close early, announcing on social media just before nine o'clock tonight that the grounds were closing. The decision coming after storms forced fair goers to seek shelter earlier in the evening. This video from Adam trying to stay dry in the bud pavilion while the fair was still open. You can see rain falling onto the field during the Brewers game tonight. It did not stop the team from winning, though. The Brewers beating the Mets 74. So let's get over to storm team for meteorologist Lauren Larson, where you have been tracking this storm all night. Lauren. Yeah, absolutely. It has been a busy evening afternoon, really all day here in the storm team for weather center. As we take a look at that storm team for radar here, we're seeing lots of lightning as well as heavy rain. And I do want to reiterate what Kaylee was saying. We're not. This is not the time to be driving outside right now. With the heavy rain, we're seeing a decrease in visibility as well as flooded roadways throughout most of Milwaukee County. So this is kind of where those storms are moving through right now. We're starting to see the storms ramp up again, which means even more rain across the area. Here's a look at some rainfall estimates. You can see the heaviest rain has really fallen in Milwaukee County again, exactly where we do have that flash flood warning in effect that goes until two a.m. Meaning we're still anticipating heavy rain and flooding as we go throughout the next couple of hours. The part in the green here that is a flood watch, and that goes until Monday morning. That tells me we can expect more of the same in store for us as we go into early Monday morning. Now our temperatures cannot fall below the dew point values, meaning that we can expect those temperatures in the seventies all night long. And when it's hot and muggy like this, it is perfect conditions for these thunderstorms again to redevelop and continue to bring heavy rain across the area.
