Central Texas continues to face significant flash flood threats, particularly along the Guadalupe River and surrounding areas. Search and rescue teams, supported by volunteers and local officials, are working across a large area affected by recent flooding, with efforts complicated by ongoing heavy rainfall and debris.

AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter stressed the importance of acting promptly on flash flood warnings, noting that climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme rainfall events. He recommended that businesses and camps have designated staff to monitor weather alerts at all times, clear emergency procedures, and multiple ways to receive warnings to enhance safety during severe weather events.

Flash flood threat returns to central Texas

Joining us right now is Accuweather chief meteorologist Jonathan Porter. You know, John, we were talking with Melissa Konstanzer, you and I, just about an hour ago, and she was talking about the area of what happened and the area that needs to be searched. And it's pretty daunting here. Let's start with the Guadalupe River, which was the cause of the problems here. Yeah, it's a large part along the Guadalupe River, and there are so many volunteers here who are out combing each part of this river here. So many people helping with the local officials and with the search. And the concern is we don't like this setup that's going on today here with heavy rain developing just south and west of this area right now. That's going to spread in, as we said today, and can renew the flood problems. It's very likely that the search will be suspended once again. But look at how large of an area this is from the south fork of the Guadalupe River through the area near Camp Mystic and out to Hunt, Ingram, down to Kerrville, and all the way over to Comfort. And then also further east from there, too, because that wall of water also made its way further downstream east of Comfort toward Canyon Lake. So we're talking about a very significant area here that needs to be thoroughly searched. I believe the area, John, is over 130 miles. And remember, there's all this debris that has to be looked at, has to be cleared and looked under. So it's really a daunting task. But the question we answer, we've been trying to answer, John, we know the meteorology was where it needed to be with the warnings and the timeliness of the warnings. So the question is, is how do we go forward? Well, the flash flooding, the realities of flash flooding is that flash flooding remains an increasing danger. Of course, it's always been part of the climatology of the United States, and especially in areas of steep terrain like the Texas Hill Country. But climate change is making these extreme rainfall events even more likely. So that means that this will remain an increasing danger that we cannot stop. However, proactive action saves lives based on acting immediately on flash flood warnings. If you're in a low-lying area near a creek, stream, or river, that's when you want to move to higher ground when you get that flash flood warning, which in this case was issued more than three hours before the peak of the flash flooding arrived, giving ample time for people to seek higher ground. Sometimes it's just a few feet more in elevation to get you out of the greatest risk area. And of course, it's the responsibility of the public officials and all businesses to ensure safety and take action promptly based upon those flash flood warnings. And John, your experience not only as a chief meteorologist, but with weather policy, you spend a lot of time with government agencies, whether it's FEMA or our friends at the National Weather Service, or even our AFB service, our AccuWeather for Business service, where we provide tailor warnings for specific areas. We kind of came up with some recommendations as we go forward. Yeah, here's some thoughts for summer camps and also all businesses really in order to ensure safety utilizing AccuWeather's proven warnings with proven superior accuracy. You have to have at each business somebody who's responsible for monitoring warnings 24 by 7, just like a location would manage physical security. Somebody must be on watch 24-7. If somebody's going to be on shift for that and then shift it over to another person and make sure that that is handled 24-7, outdoor warning sirens and other ways of getting those warnings out can be very helpful at a camp or another location like that where there are a large number of people that may be sleeping. So at the site, those outdoor warning sirens can be helpful. And it's important that there be a known procedure for every type of severe weather, including flash flooding. What are people going to do if a flash flood warning is issued? And that not only is that procedure known by all staff members, but it's rehearsed frequently. This is very important. You want it to be second nature so that when people come into a summer camp or they come to an RV park or any other business, they know what's going to happen if a flash flood warning is issued and they practiced it so that when it happens in the middle of the night, they can act fast. And it's always important to have multiple ways of getting warnings here at AccuWeather. Many of our business customers, we provide the ability for those customers to confirm they've received that warning at burning. If we don't hear from them within a minute or two on a high priority warning, we're on the phone calling them to make sure they've received it.
