Captain Danita Pettis, the highest ranking Black female officer in the Cincinnati Police Department, has been ordered reinstated with full back pay and benefits after being fired in December 2024. An independent arbitration panel determined that the city failed to provide sufficient evidence to justify her dismissal, which was originally based on allegations of dishonesty, false payroll information, and insubordination.

Pettis and her legal team argued that her firing was retaliation for discrimination complaints she filed against the police chief. The city stated it will comply with the arbitrator's decision, while Pettis's attorney indicated that further legal actions may be considered regarding previous administrative complaints.

Pettis CPD's highest ranking black female police officer who was fired in December of 2024, received an arbitration decision ordering the Cincinnati Police Department to reinstate her with full back pay and benefits. At the time of her firing, the department claims she was let go for dishonesty, false payroll information, and insubordination. The three member independent panel in their findings said the city was not able to meet its burden of proof to fire Pettis to these accusation. Pettis says the past is the past, but I gotta move on in order to do my job. I have to move on in terms of my mental terms of my physical in order to be an effective leader. Pettis and her legal team maintained that the firing was retaliation for discrimination charges. Pettis filed against Chief Teresa Fiji in July of 2023 in 2024, when the department investigated Pettis bringing in fire chief Frank McKinley as a neutral party, he recommended only an 11 day suspension, but Chief Fiji wanted a more severe punishment lobbying city manager Cheryl Long for termination. Instead, the city says they give weight to the recommendations of its department directors when making an employment decision. Long going on to say in a statement, the city has committed to moving forward in alignment with the arbitrators decision despite the city vowing to make Pettis whole. Her attorney, Jason Matthews, still feels the city needs to take further accountability. What further accountability in your estimation is needed at this point? We do have some legal options based on some. Some prior administrative complaints which were filed, but I'd prefer not to discuss those at this time and I would like to give the city the opportunity to come to the table in Cincinnati. J.
