FIFA Commissioner Gianni Infantino announced that more than 150 million ticket requests have been submitted for the 2026 World Cup within just 15 days, marking the highest demand in the tournament's history. The increase in interest is attributed to the expansion of the tournament from 32 to 48 countries, resulting in more matches and greater global participation.

Despite the higher number of games, competition for tickets remains intense, with demand far exceeding supply. FIFA recently reduced some ticket prices following fan backlash, and tourism officials expect the event to generate over $1 billion in visitor spending in British Columbia alone, with Canada's opening match set for June 12 in Toronto.

So why the record-breaking number of requests? It's partly because there are more games to look forward to than ever before. One of the benefits of this particular World Cup is it goes from 32 countries to 48. Despite more matches, there's stiff competition for tickets. FIFA determined the ticket availability of each of the countries and the specific markets. Earlier this month, FIFA slashed prices of some tickets after global fan backlash. Tickets for Canada's opening game started at $1,300. Now, lower-tier tickets are starting at $60 U.S. Those will be given to national federations to decide which loyal fans get them. There are more people wanting tickets than there are tickets available. And anytime there's the lotteries, there's a lot of people that are unhappy and then there are a few that are happy that they actually managed to get tickets. Tourism officials say this surge in interest is good news for British Columbia. The Ministry of Tourism estimates the seven World Cup matches at BC Place will attract more than 350,000 fans and generate over $1 billion in visitor spending between 2026 and 2031.
