So people with severe food allergies finally have something that can help if they can afford it. The FDA just approved Xolair for people with certain allergies, but this drug actually pulls double duty because it's also effective for asthma patients. So from treating asthma to curbing the sometimes deadly effects of a common allergy, Xolair carries some real potential here in the healthcare market. But as we mentioned, some patients are worried they won't be able to afford it. So insured patients will typically pay lower medical costs, but according to NPR, costs for uninsured patients can reach up to $2,900 a month for kids, and then for adult patients, that cost jumps up to $5,000 a month. So accessibility could be a real issue here. Would I recommend it for everyone? Absolutely not. I think you have to look at various factors. It's a cost, a very, very expensive medication. It does not cure the person, so it's again a safety net. It's not a cure. Also the feasibility of injecting yourself and staying on a medicine lifelong, I mean those are multiple different factors that you'd have to look into and consider before you commit yourself to starting something like this. So the doctor mentioned something very important. Even with that top dollar price, Xolair isn't an allergy cure. Patients would be paying thousands of dollars a month for a safety net to keep them out of the emergency room if and when they do encounter an allergy trigger. So experts made note of several coupons and rebate offers that drug makers typically have available for this type of drug, but that's one pricey safety net.
