The incident occurred after another teenager fired at Wilson and missed, prompting Officer Daniel Gold to respond and shoot Wilson before identifying himself. Authorities later found a gun in Wilson's waistband, and he died less than an hour later.

The settlement, which is the largest in U.S. history for a police killing, surpasses the amount paid to George Floyd's family in 2021. Officer Gold remains on administrative duty while the county Sheriff's Homicide Unit investigates. The city maintains the settlement is not an admission of liability but a business decision.

Officer Daniel Gold raced to the scene, but practically collided with Wilson. Quickly fired before identifying himself. Authorities later found a gun tucked in Wilson's waistband. The Police Department says Officer Gold is still on the force, but in an administrative role, while the county Sheriff's Homicide Unit investigates as it does after all police shootings, the. Facts of the tragedy are the thing of nightmares. One Tuesday, the San Diego City Council approved a $30 million payment to Wilson's family. It's the largest police settlement in U.S. history, surpassing the $27 million paid by the city of Minneapolis. To the family of George Floyd in 2021, according to a staff report, the city of San Diego maintains the settlement is not an admission of liability, but a business decision.
