Chicago has joined a growing list of cities studies say are slowly sinking. Rising temperatures are said to be playing a role. Researchers at Northwestern University placed 150 sensors underneath downtown Chicago, inside basements, tunnels and parking garages. They determined that heat trapped underground has caused the clay that Chicago is built on top of to sink. Clay is particularly sensitive to temperature changes. Not only Chicago rests on clays, but in general, most cities that have been built next to water, so lakes or rivers, rests on clays. This comes just two months after a study released by the University of Rhode Island indicated that New York City is also sinking, leaving it more vulnerable to flooding from rising sea levels. That sinking is just a tiny amount. It's a little less than two millimeters a year. And so that's not much in any given year. Right. But over 10 years, you're looking at, you know, a couple inches. Other studies have shown that cities like Miami, Houston and New Orleans are also sinking. Shifting land can cause buildings to tilt or crack. Researchers say there are ways to mitigate the potential flooding and sinking. And so if we change our policies to respond properly to storms, we can prepare for the flooding in the long run. Capture at least a portion of this heat to reuse it in buildings, for example, for space heating or hot water production. So there are very concrete things that can be done.
