The Gambia opened its first trial Thursday against a member of the country's notorious "Junglers" paramilitary unit, which acted as a death squad under the reign of ex-dictator Yahya Jammeh.

Gambia has commenced its first trial against Sana Majang, the former leader of the Junglers paramilitary unit, which operated as a death squad during the rule of ex-president Yaya Jammeh. Majang pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder at the high court in Banjul, with charges relating to the deaths of Kajali Jami and Samba Wori, as well as the shooting of journalist Deida Heidara.

Prosecutors allege that Majang killed Kajali Jami by slitting his neck and stabbed Samba Wori in the chest. The Junglers have been accused by the United Nations and rights groups of extrajudicial killings and torture. Majang was arrested in Senegal in November and repatriated to Gambia in December. The next hearing is scheduled for February 9 and may include additional murder charges.

Ex-Jammeh death squad leader pleads not guilty as Gambia trial opens

In December Manjal was also charged with two other killings including the shooting of long time journalist Deida Heidara. Majang was charged with the murder of Kajali Jami reportedly a member of the MFDC rebels a separatist group fighting for independence for the Kasamans region of Senegal. Prosecutors allege Majang killed him by slitting his neck with a knife. They also accused Majang of killing another man Samba Wori by stabbing him in the chest. The next year is scheduled for February 9 and could include additional murders. The jungler worked independently of the Gambia's regular army and the death squad has long been accused of extrajudicial killings and torture by the United Nations and rice groups. Majang was arrested in neighboring Senegal in November and repatriated to the Gambia in December.

The United Nations Security Council has held an emergency meeting to discuss the deadly anti-establishment protests in Iran at the request of the United States. President Donald Trump has refused to rule out military action on Iran over the killing of protesters. Tehran has vowed to retaliate if that happens.
