Europe is experiencing its first significant heatwave of the summer, with temperatures rising to 36 degrees Celsius in Britain and up to 38 degrees in parts of France. The UK has issued an amber alert across England, while four departments in southern France are under high heat warnings. A stationary high-pressure system, known as a 'heat dome,' is intensifying conditions across Western Europe, trapping hot air and preventing relief.

The Iberian Peninsula is particularly affected, with Spain expecting temperatures to exceed 40 degrees Celsius and authorities preparing for an increase in heat stroke cases. In Greece, the extreme heat has contributed to wildfires, prompting evacuations and firefighting efforts near Athens. Despite some blazes being brought under control, the ongoing high temperatures continue to pose significant risks.

Europe swelters in summer's first heatwave as continent warms

With highs of 36 degrees expected across parts of Britain in the coming days, residents are flocking to the coast in search of relief. It makes a nice change, it's really nice. I've been drinking loads of water and I've put sun cream on. The UK is bracing for some of its highest temperatures in three years, with an amber alert now in force across all of England. And it's not just Britain, much of the Mediterranean is sweltering too. Across the Channel in France temperatures could soar to 38 degrees in some regions. Four departments in the south are under the second highest heat alert and there's no sign of relief just yet. A second heat peak is expected this weekend and into early next week, caused by a more stable weather pattern. A powerful heat dome, essentially a large stationary area of high pressure, will settle over Western Europe. It traps hot air, stops weather systems from moving through and intensifies the heat by compressing the air. That heat dome is now gripping parts of southern Europe, sending temperatures soaring across the Iberian Peninsula. In Spain, it's turned deadly. With the heat expected to surpass 40 degrees this weekend, authorities are bracing for a rise in heat stroke cases. In Greece, the extreme temperatures are triggering wildfires. On Friday, homes were evacuated and water-bombing planes deployed as 130 firefighters tackled fast-moving flames south of Athens. The blaze is now under control, but with temperatures forecast to stay around the 40 degree mark, the fire risk remains dangerously high.
